When I’m being interviewed as a a songwriter, this question will always come in sooner or later, in the discussion; Where do you get the inspiration/ idea’s from to write a song?
In this series of blogs, I’m going to give you the long answer to this question, and not the short answer that is needed because of time restrictions in a normal interview. We need to clarify one or two points before we begin.
What Is a Song?
A song is a combination of two art forms, music and poetry, but the lyrics in a song need to get to the point much faster than a poem does, indeed, sometimes a poem may have several meanings, this is not to say that there is not any songs like that, but as a general rule, the songwriter needs to grab the attention of the listener very quickly.
If you are a writer of plays, books, screenplays etc., The writer needs to find his voice, what this means, is, that the writer should write from his/her own experience on subjects that matter to them on a personal level. The writer is in a sense exposing all their inner feelings, in the hope that people will connect with how they feel themselves. Here is one of the great songs from recent times “Someone Like You”
I heard that you’re settled down
That you found a girl and you’re married now.
I heard that your dreams came true.
Guess she gave you things I didn’t give to you.
The combination of great lyrics, incredible music and an amazing vocalist, made Adele a super star.
I’ve had a lot of heartache in my own life, but I’ve also had an incredible amount of love, and I hope to give you some insights into this very personal journey and give you some of the songs that have been inspired along the way.
