I used to think that this idea about genre was a load of rubbish and categorising music was only for commercial purpose‘s, but now I think it is a good thing because nobody can do everything, sure, you can have a go at everything, but sooner or later you are going to have to decide what it is you are best at and what you want to be. I know this is true because I have made this mistake many times. Let me explain, I can give you a list of instruments that I’m competent at playing, but I’m not great at any because to be great at anything needs serious dedication. Examples of dedication in music are to numerous to cite but it might be easier to cite what it is not so great?
In the western world success is measured by popularity, that’s why we have the ridiculous modern day celebrity culture, there are now so many celebrities, that they volunteer themselves to live in the jungle for a few weeks to get humiliated in the most degrading manner possible, just to stay in the limelight.
I was the performer and M.C. at a gig recently, it was a surprise anniversary party for a couple who had been married for twenty years, their children were well mannered, respectful and easy to talk to, the oldest boy of 3 brothers and 1 sister was the top student at high school, when having a chat with him he said, that he was disappointed that he didn’t achieve 100% for his maths higher grade he only got 99% !! If I got 99% for anything they would have had me up for cheating.
Would you say that these parents were successful? Why yes! No award ceremonies no cash prizes, no award ceremonies just genuine love from the children.
So if you are undecided about your genre or anything else that you want to do in life have a good think about it, because it will be with you for a very long time, there are lots of things you can do in music, some of the best musicians I have ever worked with are the ones that get very little credit what the do. I had moved from one kind of music to another one day and Karen (my wife ) who had no musical training said to me “Why are you practicing that kind of music? Answer: “I think it will get me more money” she said: “For goodness sake stick to what you are good at” good advice, what do you think.
