#2 Song Writing Lyrics

Now that you have some chords to work with, lets consider the lyrics. Whatever genre you choose the lyrics will have some do’s and don’ts, so you will need to start reading the lyrics of the songs that you have chosen from your genre, start comparing what is being said, then try and sum up in one or two words what they are about, what’s the story? Is there a message in there? Perhaps there is no sense to what is being said but the words just sound good. Here is a good sample of a lyric that makes no sense by Marc Bolan of T Rex, but when it is sung it just sounds great.

Ride A White Swan

Verse 1

Ride it on out like a bird in the sky ways

Ride it on out like you were a bird

Fly it all out like an eagle in a sunbeam

Ride it all out like you were a bird.

Chorus

Wear a tall hat like a druid in the old days

Wear a tall hat and a tattooed gown

Ride a white swan like the people of the Beltane

Wear your hair long babe you can’t go wrong.

The trick with this kind of song is this, the listener will take from it whatever he or she wants to, Marc wasn’t high on drugs, he was just a very clever writer this was an artistic decision he made, and he new exactly what he was doing. Have fun!
