I think it’s true to say that our teenage years can be difficult, awkward, and very exciting, as we grow into maturity, but our opinions and point of view can change a lot in just a few short years, and I reckon it’s probably a very good idea to listen to those who have more experience, especially our parents.
I had a few girlfriends when I was that age, but I kept them all at arms length because I wanted a career as a musician, but that didn’t stop me dating, because I enjoyed female company. During this time in my life I did meet one girl that I liked a lot, and loved her in my own selfish way, so we got engaged. The problem for me was that she lived in Durham and I lived in Ayrshire, it wasn’t that far to travel but it might as well have been on the moon as far as I was concerned. Her name was Jean, and we would write to each other, but I still dated other girls, how bad was that! The point I’m making is, I just didn’t think it was that bad, but my parents told me I was wrong over and over again. I wish I had listened to them, I would have been a kindness to tell her that I wasn’t interested in getting married, but that would have taken courage, and thoughtfulness. She eventually worked everything out for herself, and sent me a break up later with the ring in the envelope, I bet your not surprised at that.
Many years later, when I was working on a folk album with my good friend Colin, he handed me a lyric sheet that had been given to us, for the album. The title of the song is “The Swallow” the words made me think of Jean, so I wrote the music with her in mind, as a kind of tribute to her. Below are the first verse and chorus of the song.
The Swallow sings a lonely song
For the exile o’er the sea
Gone now are the day’s of glory
The swallow south will flee
Surely you will hear my song
Lilting the west sae free
Sighing where the waves are breaking
By the endless sea
The swallow is my star to guide me
Singing it’s song sae free
In the Autumn glory
Bring your love back home to me
