#9 My Top Ten Modern Day Crooners: No 7…Tom Jones

The career of our Tom has spanned six decades beginning with hits in the sixties “Its Not Unusual” “What’s New Pussycat” “Delilah” “Green Green grass of Home” In 2008 The New York Times called Tom am musical shape shifter, who could slide from soulful rasp to pop croon with a voice as husky as it was pretty. Unquote.

He has sold over 100 million records with thirty six top 40 hits. So why have I not put our Tom higher in the list? Because in my opinion Tom Jones is one of the best soul singers of our day, and I think if he were asked what kind of vocalist he was, I think! It would be the soul singer. To sell this many records you will find that the genre shifts quite a bit, from show tunes to gospel, he is a great singer but I think you have got to believe in what you do and stick with it, I think if he had stayed with the soul music he could have been a super star in the way that Michael Jackson was.

Finally I should mention, that he is  Sir Thomas Jones being awarded an OBE from the Queen. Sir Tom we thank you.
